Kwara State Launches Cattle Insemination Program for Farmers

The Kwara State Government has initiated a statewide artificial insemination program for cattle to improve local breeding and increase milk and dairy production. This project is being implemented in collaboration with the Genex URUS American International Animal Company.
Hon. Oloruntoyosi Thomas, the State Commissioner for Livestock Development, announced the program's launch in Ilorin, stating that it aims to cover thousands of cattle, beginning with an initial target of 500 cattle for September. Plans are also in place to establish an insemination center in Malete and replicate it in other communities to enhance farmers' access.
The program includes training for artificial insemination technicians, involving students from the University of Ilorin and local youths. Alhaji Ahmed Umar, Director of Livestock in the Ministry, expressed hopes for an 85% success rate and emphasized the need for stakeholder collaboration.
Dr. Saka Shittu, Team Lead at Genex URUS, encouraged cattle owners to participate, noting that the service is currently free in Kwara State.
