Labour Party Convention Today Amid Leadership Crisis

The Labour Party will hold its national convention today in Umuahia, Abia State, under the leadership of Nnenadi Usman, who heads the caretaker committee. This event comes amid a prolonged leadership crisis within the party, particularly involving factions loyal to former national chairman Julius Abure.

The convention is expected to attract delegates from across the country and will address critical party matters, including leadership structure and future political direction. A federal high court in Abuja previously ruled to recognize Usman's caretaker committee after dismissing Abure's appeal, which sought to reclaim leadership.

However, Abure's faction has rejected this ruling and intends to challenge it in the Supreme Court, asserting that the court lacked jurisdiction to interfere in the party's internal affairs. The convention aims to ratify the caretaker committee's position and possibly elect a new leader, contingent upon the court's directives.
