Lagos AG Critiques Police Cooperation on Land Grabbing

Justice Lawal Pedro, the Lagos State Attorney General, expressed concerns regarding the Nigerian Police Force's lack of cooperation in the state's fight against land grabbing during a press briefing on 2026. He noted that the police have frequently failed to comply with direct orders from the state government, undermining enforcement efforts against land grabbers.

Pedro mentioned that the Lagos State Special Task Force on Land Grabbers has faced challenges due to police non-compliance and interference from senior federal authorities. He referred to previous issues under former Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, who had been alerted to these matters.

Despite some initial compliance from the police, the situation deteriorated with changes in police leadership. Pedro called for renewed intervention from the current Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu to improve cooperation.

The task force has received 1,628 petitions from May 2023 to April 2026 and concluded 221 cases during this period, although the Attorney General did not address the low resolution rate linked to enforcement difficulties.
