NPA and Police Tackle Illegal Checkpoints in Lagos

The Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) and the Lagos State Police Command are taking action against illegal checkpoints that disrupt cargo movement in Lagos. Dr.

Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of NPA, disclosed this during a high-level stakeholder meeting aimed at addressing operational bottlenecks affecting port access roads. Investigations revealed multiple challenges, including illegal extortion points and jurisdictional overlaps among security agencies.

Dantsoho noted that these issues extend beyond the immediate port environment, particularly affecting areas around Berger and Mile 2. The Lagos State Police Command denied authorizing any checkpoints along the corridor, stating that personnel found extorting truckers were acting illegally.

A joint task force will be established to ensure smoother operations around the Apapa-Tin Can Island port corridor. The meeting included representatives from various agencies and emphasized the need for inter-agency cooperation to tackle these challenges effectively.
