Fire at Lagos Airport Extinguished, Flights Resume

On February 23, 2026, a fire broke out at the old terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, disrupting flight operations and stranding passengers. The incident, which began in a section of the terminal, led to thick smoke billowing and affected control tower activities.

The Lagos Airport Police Command, led by ASP Moham Adeola, confirmed that the fire was successfully contained after several hours of firefighting efforts. Twelve workers trapped in the affected area, including near the control tower, were safely evacuated and received prompt medical attention.

Fortunately, no fatalities were recorded. Following the incident, flight operations, which had been temporarily disrupted, resumed fully, although the old terminal 1 building remains closed for further assessment and clearance.

The police commended the collaborative efforts of the Lagos State Fire Service and other responding agencies for their professionalism and bravery in managing the situation.
