Lagos State Arrests Over 10,000 Environmental Offenders

Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, disclosed that 10,634 environmental offenders were arrested across the state within one year during a press briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa. This enforcement initiative aims to promote environmental sanitation and restore order.

The breakdown of arrests includes 5,715 individuals apprehended for illegal highway activities, 3,886 for offenses such as street trading and environmental pollution, 102 for open defecation, and 931 for waste management-related offenses. The enforcement drive is part of the state government's broader commitment to building a cleaner and healthier environment.

Wahab also mentioned the establishment of 12 new partnerships for waste management and sustainability initiatives. Additionally, the state has implemented a ban on styrofoam and single-use plastics, and has installed 100 air quality monitoring sensors across Lagos.

The state government is also focusing on flood control and maintaining drainage channels to improve public health outcomes.
