Lagos Arrests 275 for Open Defecation Amid Sanitation Efforts

On January 1, 2024, the Lagos State Government arrested at least 275 residents across various locations for engaging in open defecation, a practice that remains illegal despite the availability of 8,710 functional public toilets. Tokunbo Wahab, during an interview, emphasized the ongoing enforcement against this behavior, highlighting that 70 arrests occurred on Lagos Island, 62 in the Berger area, and 43 along the Oshodi Expressway.

The government has established an open defecation task force that patrols daily to address this issue, with arrests made regularly. Wahab noted that the law requires every eatery and petrol station to have toilet facilities, contributing to a total of 35,000 toilets statewide.

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, in collaboration with Ogun State, has launched a media campaign aimed at improving public health and hygiene, particularly along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. A UNICEF report indicates that poor sanitation and open defecation contribute to serious health risks, particularly for children, with 100,000 Nigerian children under five dying annually from diarrheal diseases linked to unsafe water and poor sanitation.
