Lagos Assembly Urges Governor Sanwo-Olu for Independent Financing of Local Councils

The Lagos State House Assembly has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to support the independent financing of local government legislatures to ensure council autonomy. The Assembly expressed concerns over former council chairmen retaining financial control, urging for a framework for independent financing.

Hon Sani Okanlawon highlighted the need for councillor financial independence to strengthen grassroots democracy, citing the 1999 Constitution's recognition of the legislative arm at the local government level. The Assembly aims to prevent the executive branch's undue influence and enhance separation of powers.

The resolution followed a motion during Tuesday's plenary, emphasizing the importance of empowering local government legislatures for effective governance.
