Lagos State Bans 'Korope' Buses Amid Protests

The Lagos State Government has announced a ban on 'korope' buses, which are mini-buses popular for public transport, amid protests regarding traffic disruptions along the Lekki-Epe Expressway. This action is seen as a breach of an earlier agreement made with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).

The protests occurred on February 17 and 18, 2026, despite extensive consultations with stakeholders. Hon. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser on Transport, stated that the protests undermine the government's reform initiatives aimed at improving transport services.

The reform program, first discussed in 2024, includes deploying high-capacity buses, relocating 'korope' mini-buses to inner roads, and introducing e-ticketing. A formal agreement was reached on June 27, 2024, and the first phase of the reform is set to commence on December 8, 2025, covering four major routes.

The government emphasizes the importance of compliance with these reforms to ensure safe and efficient transport for Lagos residents.
