Lagos State Bans Korope Buses, Enforces Transport Reform

The Lagos State government has implemented a ban on 'Korope' mini-buses operating on major corridors, a decision that follows significant traffic disruptions on the Lekki-Epe Expressway earlier in the week. The government officials described the actions of the mini-bus operators as a violation of an agreement previously reached with union representatives.

Sola Giwa, the state special adviser on transport, emphasized the need for compliance with the reform initiatives designed to overhaul public transport. The reform plan, first outlined for 2024, aims to replace fragmented bus services with high-capacity vehicles and introduce electronic ticketing.

A formal framework was adopted following stakeholder sessions held in June 2024, with the first phase of the scheme set to begin on December 8, 2025, covering key routes including Ajah, Obalende, Oshodi, Berger, and Iyana Ipaja. The approved scheme will feature state colors and QR codes for identification, with measures aimed at ensuring safer travel and stable fares.
