Lagos Warns Against Health Risks of Spoiled Tomatoes

The Lagos State government has issued a warning regarding the health dangers posed by spoiled tomatoes, which are often infested with fungi, including those that produce harmful toxins such as aflatoxin. Afolabi Solebo, the General Manager of the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, advised residents to avoid tomatoes showing visible signs of white, green, or black fungal growth, as cooking does not eliminate the associated health risks.

Solebo emphasized that consuming contaminated tomatoes can lead to severe health complications, including liver damage. He urged the public to inspect food items carefully before purchase and to properly dispose of any contaminated products.

The agency has deployed enforcement teams across markets in Lagos to identify and apprehend traders selling unsafe food products. The Lagos State government remains committed to safeguarding public health and ensuring the availability of safe food items in the market.
