Lagos Sets March 31, 2026 Deadline for Elevator Safety

The Lagos State government has announced a deadline of March 31, 2026, for building owners to register and obtain safety certification for elevators. This directive, communicated by Lanre Mojola, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Safety Commission, aims to strengthen safety standards and reduce accidents associated with poorly maintained lifts.

The initiative comes in response to the rapid urban expansion in Lagos, which has seen a surge in multi-storey developments, including apartment blocks, office towers, hotels, and shopping complexes. The Lagos State Safety Commission emphasizes that compliance is critical for safeguarding lives and maintaining operational standards in the city's growing high-rise environment.

Failure to comply by the deadline will result in enforcement actions, including the shutdown of elevators and sealing of premises found to operate unregistered or uncertified equipment. To facilitate compliance, the commission has launched a dedicated online portal for the digital registration of vertical transport equipment.
