Lagos to Demolish Defective Buildings After Collapse

The Lagos State government announced plans to demolish structurally defective buildings in Alakija, Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, after a three-storey building collapsed on Thursday, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals. Gbenga Omotoso, the Commissioner for Information, disclosed this during a site inspection on Friday, expressing condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirming the government's commitment to protecting lives through strict enforcement of building regulations.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also extended his sympathies. The emergency response teams, including LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, successfully rescued 27 people from the rubble.

Omotoso noted that the collapsed building had previously been marked for evacuation due to identified structural defects, which occupants ignored. He warned that any violations of building regulations would lead to prosecution, emphasizing that safety is a priority and that no dangerous structures would be allowed to remain standing.
