Lagos Govt Warns Lagoon Under Threat, Plans First Waterfront Summit, "The Signs Are Clear"

The Lagos State Government has issued a warning about the severe strain facing the city's lagoon due to unregulated dredging, abandoned wrecks, and indiscriminate land reclamation. This has led to worsening floods, shrinking fish stocks, and displaced communities.

Commissioner Dayo Bush Alebiosu of Waterfront Infrastructure Development emphasized the urgent need for collaboration among residents, government agencies, traditional rulers, researchers, and the private sector to address this crisis. In response, the Ministry announced plans to host the inaugural Lagos Waterfront Summit on September 11, 2025, at Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island.

The theme of the event will be "Pressure on the Lagoon, Lagos." Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will serve as the chief host, encouraging residents to share ideas for safeguarding the lagoon for future generations.
