LASEMA Responds to 12-Hour Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Gridlock

On Tuesday, a seven-vehicle crash at the Kara Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway resulted in a massive gridlock, leaving motorists stranded for over 12 hours. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) reported that a 40-foot container truck without a registration number developed a mechanical fault, causing its driver to lose control and collide with six other vehicles, including a Toyota Hilux, an interstate bus, a Hyundai Odyssey, a Sienna, a Toyota Highlander, and a Mitsubishi Hilux.

Fortunately, no deaths or injuries were recorded. The crash disrupted traffic towards Ogun, worsening throughout the day and extending back into Lagos.

Frustrated drivers began to drive against traffic, creating additional congestion. LASEMA activated its incident management protocol, working alongside the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Force to clear the scene.

Recovery efforts included private towing trucks, and all affected vehicles were eventually moved to the roadside. LASTMA officials remained to monitor traffic flow post-clearance.

The ongoing repair works on the expressway further exacerbated the situation.
