JODER Condemns Attack on MITV Journalist in Lagos

The Journalists for Democratic Rights (JODER) has condemned the alleged attack on Habeeb Adejobi, a journalist with MITV, which occurred at the Kosofe local government council secretariat in Lagos State. The organization characterized the incident as a serious violation of press freedom and the rights of journalists to carry out their legitimate duties.

The assault reportedly took place on Wednesday and involved individuals believed to be loyal to the Kosofe local government chairman, Moyo Ogunlew, during a screening exercise for newly appointed supervisors and special advisers. JODER's Executive Director, Adewal Adeoy, described the attack as embarrassing and unacceptable in a democratic setting, recalling the repression journalists faced during Nigeria's military rule.

Adeoy urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure justice for Adejobi, while also calling on the Lagos State House of Assembly to investigate the conduct of the chairman's driver. JODER emphasized that journalists should be allowed to perform their responsibilities without intimidation or violence, warning that repeated attacks could undermine democracy and the media's role in holding public officials accountable.
