Lagos State Partners with Transport Unions to Combat Waste

On Saturday, Lagos State announced a partnership with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) to address the issue of indiscriminate refuse dumping along roadsides. During a joint press conference at the Alausa conference room, Oluwaseun OsiYemi, Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), emphasized that the partnership aims to empower transport union members to monitor and apprehend individuals caught illegally disposing of waste.
OsiYemi expressed concern over the environmental and public health risks posed by such practices and stated that the government would no longer tolerate them. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Commissioner for Transport, reiterated that the state would enforce strict compliance and warned that anyone caught dumping waste illegally would face prosecution.
The initiative also includes routine inspections and sanctions for parks and garages found littered with refuse. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered immediate waste evacuation across the state in response to public complaints about refuse accumulation.
