Lagos Proposes New Rates for Wastewater Management

The Lagos State Government, via the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), has proposed new rates and charges for wastewater and faecal sludge management. This proposal was presented by General Manager Engr. Adefemi Afolabi during a meeting with the Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LASWARCO) in Alausa, Ikeja.

The initiative aims to strengthen regulation, improve service delivery, and establish a transparent financial framework amid increasing wastewater generation in Lagos. Engr. Afolabi emphasized the necessity of these rates for developing a sustainable wastewater management system, given the state's growing population and the need for compliance with environmental standards.

LASWARCO's Executive Secretary, Mrs. Bukola Khadijah Adeyemo, supported the initiative, highlighting the importance of a robust regulatory framework. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration's commitment to improving liquid waste management and sanitation.

The proposed rates will undergo legislative consideration before approval. Lagos generates 2.2 million cubic metres of untreated domestic wastewater daily, necessitating these reforms.
