Lagos State Intensifies Action Against Drug Abuse Crisis

The Lagos State Government is intensifying its efforts to address the rising cases of drug substance abuse by calling for a coordinated multi-sector response. This initiative was highlighted during a forum themed "Empowering Stakeholders to Break the Cycle of Substance Abuse," held in Ikeja.

Mobolaji Ogunlend, the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, described substance abuse as a crisis with far-reaching implications, extending beyond health concerns to social challenges that threaten the state's long-term development. Ogunlend noted the prevalence of substance abuse in schools and communities, urging school counselors, religious bodies, community leaders, and security agencies to play active roles in prevention, early detection, and rehabilitation.

Toyin Ok Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, identified key pillars of the state's approach, including intensified awareness campaigns, strengthened educational efforts, and enhanced counseling services. She emphasized the need for a unified strategy and consistent stakeholder commitment to effectively tackle the issue of substance abuse in Lagos State.
