Lagos State Rewards Gateway Games Medallists with N36.3 Million Cash Prize

Lagos State has awarded N36.3 million in cash rewards to athletes who excelled at the Gateway Games held in Abeokuta, Ogun State in May 2025. The state government distributed the rewards to athletes who won medals, with individual gold medallists receiving N300,000 each, and team event winners earning up to N700,000 to be shared among the athletes involved.

The payments began on a recent Friday following the government's approval. The state's commitment to athletes' welfare was reiterated by Lekan Fatodu, the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, who highlighted the introduction of digital athlete portals and biometric IDs to ensure timely stipend, insurance, and welfare support directly to athletes.

The success of Lagos State's junior athletes at the 2025 National Youth Games in Asaba prompted Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to extend rewards to them, aiming to replicate this success at the senior level and maintain the state's leading position in Nigerian sports.
