Lagos State Confirms No Diphtheria Outbreak, Says Health Chief

On Wednesday, Prof. Akin Abayomi, the Commissioner for Health in Lagos State, provided assurance at a press briefing regarding the state's preparedness for diphtheria, stating there is currently no outbreak. He emphasized the need for vigilance due to Lagos's large population and ongoing movement between regions with high diphtheria cases.

Residents were urged to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as severe sore throat, fever, or difficulty breathing. Abayomi reported that Lagos had recorded 53 suspected diphtheria cases in 2026, with six confirmed cases that were managed appropriately.

He highlighted the importance of immunization, urging parents to ensure their children receive the complete three-dose pentavalent vaccination. Currently, Lagos has a 64% full vaccination coverage.

The Commissioner also listed four designated health facilities for managing suspected diphtheria cases and stressed the importance of respiratory hygiene.
