Lagos Approves Dredging to Address Flash Floods

Following significant flash floods in Lagos over the past two weeks, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved immediate dredging of 28 primary drainage channels across the state. The floods were attributed to heavy downpours that produced unusually high volumes of water in a short period, overwhelming existing drainage systems.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, explained that the situation was exacerbated by extreme weather events affecting not only Lagos but also other regions in Africa and North America. The coastal and hydraulic characteristics of Lagos, combined with its extensive network of lagoons, rivers, and creeks, complicate the drainage of stormwater, especially during high tide.

Wahab reassured residents that the state government is actively monitoring drainage infrastructure in flood-prone areas and is committed to investing in flood control measures to reduce future risks.
