Lagos Government Defends Flood Control Amid Criticism

The Lagos State Government, represented by Commissioner for Environment Tokunbo Wahab, defended its flood control measures during an inspection of drainage infrastructure in flood-prone areas such as Oniru and Chevron Drive. Wahab responded to criticisms following recent flash floods, stating that it is unfair to politicize the situation as the government has been diligently managing environmental challenges.

He noted that the government has implemented long-term measures over the past three years to tackle flooding, including improvements in waste management, banning certain plastic materials, and expanding drainage infrastructure. Wahab highlighted that while Lagos faces significant flooding challenges, the city has managed to control temporary flash floods effectively.

He also mentioned recent enforcement operations against illegal land reclamation that obstructed drainage channels, which were resolved within 72 hours. The commissioner emphasized the need for continued efforts to manage the environment and warned against politicizing the rainfall crisis, urging recognition of the government's work.
