Lagos Taskforce Chairman Accuses Social Media of Blackmail

Adetayo Akerel, the Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, has publicly accused social media operators of blackmail following the seizure of vehicles for traffic violations. During a radio program on Lagos Traffic Radio 96.1 FM, Akerel disclosed that an individual identified as Sheriffdeen Ojon orchestrated a campaign aimed at tarnishing the agency's reputation.

This campaign allegedly stemmed from Ojon's repeated requests for the release of motorcycles, commonly known as "okada," that were impounded for violating traffic laws, particularly for driving against traffic. Akerel declined these requests, which he claims triggered threats of an online smear campaign against him and the Taskforce.

He presented evidence, including screenshots of Facebook messages, showing demands for preferential treatment. Akerel emphasized the importance of strict enforcement of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law of 2018, which mandates the outright forfeiture of vehicles caught driving against traffic, to prevent accidents and protect lives.
