LASERC Bars Recovery of Old Electricity Bills in Lagos

The Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) has disclosed that electricity suppliers in Lagos State are prohibited from recovering charges that are older than 12 months, except in instances involving meter tampering or illegal use of electricity. This announcement was made to inform consumers of their rights and to address growing concerns regarding the recovery of old electricity bills by distribution companies.

LASERC emphasized that the regulatory framework protects consumers and ensures transparency in billing practices. The commission's position aligns with provisions in the Retail Electricity Supply Code, specifically paragraph 35, which restricts the recovery of old charges.

Abiodun Ogunley, the Governor of Lagos State, and Babajide Sanwo-Olu have committed to removing electricity subsidies, insisting that consumers pay the real cost of electricity. LASERC aims to improve service delivery and has plans to establish zonal offices to enhance complaint resolution and regulatory service access.
