Lassa Fever Outbreak in Taraba State Claims 15 Lives

A Lassa fever outbreak in Taraba State has resulted in the deaths of at least 15 individuals, with 49 others infected across several local government areas. Dr.

Suleiman Kirim, head of clinic services at the Federal Medical Centre in Jalingo, confirmed these figures while providing an update on the situation. Currently, 45 patients are receiving treatment at various health facilities, and 20 have recovered and been discharged.

This outbreak is noted as the largest in the state in the past 14 years. Dr.

Kirim expressed concern over delays in seeking medical care, as many patients initially relied on traditional remedies and self-medication before visiting hospitals. This behavior has contributed to the rising death toll.

The Federal Medical Centre is collaborating with the Taraba State Government and the Central Disease Control to strengthen surveillance and improve emergency response. Residents are urged to maintain environmental hygiene and promptly report symptoms to the nearest health facility.
