Olu Jacobs' Legacy in Nigerian Arts Celebrated After Death

Veteran Nigerian actor Olu Jacobs passed away at the age of 84, as confirmed by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, via Instagram. The family referred to him as "The Lion of Lufodo" and requested privacy during their mourning period.

Following his death, a 2012 interview conducted by Factory 78 resurfaced, where Jacobs expressed pride in the growth of Nigeria's arts and culture. He reflected on the past when local creative works were often compared unfavorably to European standards, a situation he believed had improved.

Jacobs also challenged stereotypes about acting, asserting that it requires significant intelligence. Born Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in England and became a prominent figure in Nollywood.

His accolades include the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007, the Merit Award at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards, and the MAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. He was also honored with the national title of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2011.

Jacobs is survived by his wife, fellow veteran Joke Silva.
