LAWMA Advocates Stakeholder Collaboration in Waste Management

On Wednesday, during an annual conference organized by the Nigeria Employers' Consultative Association (NECA) at Alausa, Lagos State, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), called for collaboration among stakeholders in waste management. He described waste management as a critical urban governance issue with far-reaching implications for public health, flood control, and environmental sustainability.

Gbadegesin noted that household waste collection across the state is facilitated by licensed private sector participation, which operates under a structured area-based system regulated by LAWMA. He stressed the importance of efficient operation and cooperation from residents to adopt proper waste disposal practices, warning against indiscriminate dumping and illegal cart pushers that undermine waste management efforts.

Gbadegesin also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen the waste management system, improve monitoring, and promote sustainable waste practices, including resource recovery and recycling, as part of a broader shift towards an efficient, value-driven waste management system.
