Lawyers Demand Open Trial for Delta Officer in Killing

Lawyers, represented by Avocats Sans Frontières (ASF) France, are calling for an open trial of a Delta State police officer implicated in the extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi on April 26, 2026, in Effurun. The organization, led by Country Director Angela Uwandu, condemned the summary execution, highlighting that it represents a total collapse of due process and a blatant breach of the fundamental right to life as guaranteed by Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

The group noted that a viral video showed Ogidi, who posed no imminent threat, being unlawfully killed by the officer. They emphasized the need for accountability, urging the government to conduct a swift and impartial investigation and to ensure that the officer faces prosecution in a court of law.

ASF France warned that extrajudicial killings erode public trust and destabilize democratic foundations, and they will continue to monitor the legal proceedings closely to prevent impunity.
