Delta Police Officer Arrested for Shooting Suspect Dead

On April 26, 2026, during an operation in Effurun, Delta State, a police officer, identified as Nuhu Usman, allegedly shot and killed a 28-year-old suspect named Mene Ogidi. The Delta State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement shared on April 29, emphasizing that the operation was based on intelligence indicating Ogidi was attempting to deliver a parcel containing a loaded Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.

Following the shooting, the command described Usman's actions as a violation of operational guidelines and stated that they do not condone extrajudicial conduct. The Commissioner of Police for Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi, ordered the immediate arrest of Usman, who was subsequently transferred to the state headquarters in Asaba and is expected to face disciplinary proceedings and possible prosecution.
