Legal Experts Urge Regulation of AI in Nigeria's Law Sector

During the Lex Ferenda conference held at the University of Lagos on Wednesday, legal practitioners, including Oyetola Atoyebi and Joseph Adewumi, warned against the unregulated use of artificial intelligence (AI) in legal practice. They expressed concerns about issues such as deepfakes, plagiarism, and misinformation, highlighting the ethical breaches that could arise from improper AI application.

Atoyebi emphasized the urgent need for regulations to ensure AI tools are used safely and effectively within existing legal frameworks. The conference, themed "The Future of Legal Scholarship in the Digital Age," attracted various stakeholders, including legal practitioners and students.

Olumid Osundolir noted that AI significantly transforms legal scholarship by enhancing access to resources and reducing the time required for legal research. However, Daniel Igiekhumh cautioned that AI should not be seen as a complete replacement for lawyers.

The discussions underscored the necessity of establishing regulatory measures to prevent misconceptions about AI's role in the legal profession.
