Lawyers Urged to Embrace AI at NBA-SBL Conference

The 20th annual international conference of the Nigerian Bar Association's Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) took place in Abuja, focusing on the theme "Beyond Reform: Measuring the Impact of Policy." Ayuli Jemid challenged conventional assumptions in negotiations, emphasizing that nearly 70% of negotiation outcomes are influenced by human behavior rather than legal positions. He urged lawyers to thoroughly research their counterparts, identify common interests, and build authentic trust.

The conference featured sessions on business development, with speakers including Abena Poku, who noted the influence of artificial intelligence on the legal profession, and Andrew Skipper, who encouraged Nigerian lawyers to leverage opportunities in cross-border commercial activities. Toyin Ojo advised lawyers to focus less on promoting firm credentials and more on understanding client needs.

Op Olugbasa identified areas where AI could transform legal practices, such as due diligence and contract drafting, while cautioning against over-reliance on technology, stressing the importance of professional judgment.
