Legal Dispute Impacts Wike-Backed PDP Convention Plans

A legal dispute is currently jeopardizing the upcoming People's Democratic Party (PDP) convention, which is supported by Nyesom Wike. A rival faction, led by Kabiru Turaki, has filed a motion in an Ibadan court seeking to restrain the convention, arguing that proceeding could prejudice ongoing legal matters concerning the party's leadership.

The motion, filed by Musibau Adetunbi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, contends that the convention would contravene established legal principles and could affect the subject matter of the litigation. The application reportedly urges the appellate court to maintain the status quo until the substantive appeal is determined.

Additionally, the Turaki group has petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), advising against monitoring the proposed convention due to the pending legal matters. The letter dated March 26, 2026, expresses concerns about the potential undermining of the appeal process if the convention proceeds.
