Nigerian Senate Agenda: Electoral Act Bill & Tribute to Late Senator – Feb 4 2026
On Wednesday, 4th February 2026, the Nigerian Senate sat for its 85th order paper of the 10th National Assembly's Third Session. The sitting featured a valedictory session in memory of a recently deceased senator and consideration of a major bill seeking to repeal and replace the Electoral Act 2022. Both items directly affect governance and Nigeria's electoral future.
The Nigerian Senate's sitting on 4th February 2026 opened with the national anthem, prayers, and routine housekeeping including approval of previous proceedings and the swearing-in of new members if applicable.
A special valedictory session was held to pay tribute to the late Senator Okechukwu Ezea, who represented a constituency in the 10th National Assembly and passed away on 18th November 2025, aged 62. The tribute was moved by Senate Leader Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele of Ekiti Central.
The main legislative business was the consideration of a committee report on the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal & Enactment) Bill, 2026, listed as Senate Bill 903. This bill, sponsored by Senator Bako Lalong Simon of Plateau South, seeks to repeal the existing Electoral Act 2022 and enact a new one in its place. The Senate was scheduled to consider the report from its Committee on Electoral Matters.
Several committee meetings were also scheduled, including sessions by the Public Accounts Committee, the Youth and Community Engagement Committee, and an Ad-hoc Committee investigating the Safe Schools Initiative Programme. Budget defence sessions for Health and Agricultural Colleges committees were lined up for later in the week.
