NUJ President: Less than 1% of Journalists Have Insurance

The President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahya, revealed that less than one percent of Nigerian journalists currently have health insurance. This statement was made during the enrollment of 150 journalists into the Federal Capital Territory Health Insurance Scheme in Abuja, marking a significant step towards improving healthcare access for the media profession.

Comrade Grace Ik, the NUJ FCT Council Chairman, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the welfare of journalists, noting that health insurance can drastically reduce maternal deaths and healthcare expenses. The initiative received support from Hon.

Akin Rotimi Jr., who expressed commitment to the program. Dr.

Fasaw from the FCT Health Secretariat provided 150 free health insurance slots for NUJ members, demonstrating goodwill towards improving healthcare access. The event took place during the NUJ FCT Congress, attended by 450 members, and included Dr.

Salamatu Belgor, Director of the FCT Health Insurance Scheme, among other stakeholders.
