Hamzat's Advice on Housing Sparks Debate in Nigeria

Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has ignited a debate regarding Nigeria's housing crisis by advising young workers facing high rent to consider living with their parents or sharing accommodation. He cited the example of a 22-year-old earning approximately ₦100,000 monthly, who could encounter annual rent costs around ₦1 million.

Hamzat emphasized the importance of aligning accommodation choices with income to avoid unsustainable rent expenses. He suggested that mortgage financing and improved incomes could serve as long-term solutions to the housing challenge.

Reactions to his advice varied; while some viewed living with family as a practical way to reduce expenses, others noted that not all young Nigerians have this option due to space constraints or relocation for job opportunities. Research from a Lagos housing forum in August estimated the city's housing deficit at about 3.4 million units, underscoring the gap between housing demand and supply.
