Adelabu to Resign as Power Minister for Oyo Governorship

Adebayo Adelabu, the current Minister of Power in Nigeria, is preparing to resign from his position to contest in the Oyo State governorship elections scheduled for 2027. Reports indicate that several individuals have begun positioning themselves for Adelabu's role amid expectations of his resignation within the week.

Adelabu is anticipated to seek the governorship ticket under the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, with party primaries set to resolve disputes between April 23 and May 30, 2026. His intent to run was hinted at during a video circulated in October 2025, following previous unsuccessful attempts in the 2019 and 2023 elections against incumbent Governor Seyi Makinde.

Bolaji Tunji, Adelabu's media aide, stated that there is no official directive from the presidency requiring cabinet members to resign for political ambitions. Stakeholders in the power sector are advocating for President Tinubu to appoint a technocrat, such as Bode Fadip, to replace Adelabu, emphasizing the need for competent leadership in the currently fragile electricity sector.
