Local Hunter Prevents Solar Streetlight Theft in Bayelsa

On April 19, 2026, a local hunter successfully foiled an attempt to steal solar streetlights along Bulou Orua Ebedebiri Road in Sagbama Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. The two suspects, identified as Ayebademon Peremobowei and Pere John, were caught in the act near Tungbo Town.

The hunter raised an alarm, leading to their arrest by the police, who confirmed the incident through DSP Musa Moham. The suspects are currently in police custody at the command headquarters in Yenagoa, where investigations are ongoing for possible prosecution.

This incident is part of a larger concern regarding the theft and vandalism of public infrastructure, particularly solar streetlights, which are part of a project by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) aimed at improving rural electrification and security in the region. Previous incidents of vandalism, including an attempt to steal a streetlight pole in December 2024, have raised concerns among residents about the safety and functionality of these installations.
