Nigeria's Refineries Supply Over 12 Billion Litres of Petrol

From September 2025 to September 2026, Nigeria's domestic refineries supplied 12.01 billion litres of petrol, which constituted 61.2% of the total 19.68 billion litres pumped into the market. During the same period, petrol imports totaled 7.67 billion litres, representing 38.8% of total supply, according to the September 2026 factsheet from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
Petrol imports peaked towards the end of 2025, averaging 22.1 million litres daily in September and surging to 52.1 million litres per day in November. However, by early 2026, domestic refinery output increased significantly, with imports dropping to an average of 3 million litres per day by February.
In April, local refineries supplied 40.7 million litres daily, while imports were only 3.7 million litres. Despite improvements in local supply, petrol receipts fell to 38.7 million litres per day in September, attributed to a 21% decline in domestic supply and a 30% drop in imports, alongside the exhaustion of approved import permits.
