World Athletics Launches $10M Ultimate Championship in Budapest

On September 14, 2023, World Athletics launched the inaugural Ultimate Championship in Budapest, a new event designed to reshape athletics presentation. The championship took place over three evenings and featured a record prize pot of $10 million.

This initiative aims to address the challenge of sustaining interest in athletics between Olympic Games. Unlike traditional global championships, the Ultimate Championship was intentionally designed to create a distinct experience.

Innovations included a new visual identity, condensed competition sessions, and a focus on audience engagement. The infield was painted black to enhance the visibility of illuminated events, while horizontal jumps occurred in a bright pink sandpit.

Winners received a new trophy, and their celebrations were enhanced with sparklers and music, adding a theatrical element to the championship experience.
