Maiduguri Suicide Bombings Claim 26 Lives, 146 Injured

On Monday evening, a series of coordinated suicide bombings in Maiduguri led to a tragic death toll of 26 individuals and left 146 others injured. The blasts occurred at approximately 7:00 PM in three locations: the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), a market roundabout, and near the post office.

Lt. Col. Sani Uba, spokesman for the Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai, confirmed the attacks as among the deadliest in recent years, indicating the deployment of multiple suicide bombers aimed at causing mass casualties and instilling fear among residents. Medical teams responded promptly, with 108 injured victims admitted to UMTH, 20 to Umaru Shehu Hospital, and 17 to Maiduguri Specialist Hospital.

Prof. Ahm Ahidjo, Chief Medical Director at UMTH, reported an overwhelming number of casualties. The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) condemned the attacks, particularly due to their occurrence within a healthcare facility, and called for stronger protective measures for healthcare personnel.

The Nigerian Army has increased surveillance and patrols to prevent further attacks.
