Makinde to Crown Alli Amid Boycott by Ibadan Obas

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is set to formally present the staff of office to the newly elevated crown-wearing Oba of Ibadanland, Sharafadeen Alli, on April 3, 2026, at Mapo Hall, Ibadan, at 10:00 AM. The event will see attendance from dignitaries, including traditional rulers and government officials.

However, reports indicate a boycott from some traditional rulers, including High Chief Baba Ladoja, who is currently out of town, and others who are unavailable due to medical treatment or other commitments. The promotion of Alli has been met with controversy, particularly regarding the short notice given for the coronation.

The Oyo State Government has emphasized its commitment to strengthening traditional institutions and preserving cultural heritage, despite the perceived rift between the governor and some traditional leaders. The coronation ceremony will also feature the installation of 12 kings and 40 baales, underscoring the government's efforts in traditional governance.
