Activist Leader Accuses Lagos Police Commissioner of Assault During Demolition Protests

Activist leader Hassan Taiwo, known as Soweto, has accused Lagos State Police Commissioner Moshood Jimoh of leading an assault during protests against alleged illegal demolitions and forced evictions in Makoko and Oworonsoki. Taiwo, a leader of the coalition against the demolitions, claims that he and other activists were attacked and beaten by police officers. Activist Dele Frank, also known as Arol Fela, was arraigned in the Yaba Chief Magistrate's Court following the protests. Taiwo was granted bail and plans to pursue legal action against the police.

The Youth Rights Campaign (YRC) confirmed Taiwo's arrest and subsequent bail, emphasizing the need for his immediate release. The People Democratic Party (PDP) condemned the police's actions, describing the assault on peaceful protesters as a stain on democracy. The PDP criticized the Lagos State government for its handling of the demolitions and called for transparency in the urban renewal process. The case has been adjourned to March 11, 2026.
