Lagos Activists Accuse Police Commissioner of Torture During Anti-Demolition Protest

Two human rights activists, Hassan Taiwo (Soweto) Ibeh and Soweto Zikora Ibeh, have accused the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Jimoh Olohundar, of torture during an anti-demolition protest in Lagos. The activists claim that police officers assaulted and tortured them during the protest, which aimed to highlight the displacement of residents without adequate compensation or relocation plans.

The protesters, including traders from Makoko, Oworonshoki, and other communities, demanded compensation and justice for past demolitions. The activists allege that the police used tear gas and excessive force to disperse the crowd, resulting in injuries.

Following the protest, Soweto Dele Frank was arraigned in court on charges related to the demonstration. The activists further claim that they were subjected to brutal treatment, including physical assault, attempts to force medical treatment, denial of legal representation, and restrictions on communication with their families.

The case has been adjourned to March 3, 2026, with bail set at N200,000 for each activist.
