Malaria Consortium Expands Oyo Partnerships With UCH, State Health Ministry

The organisation pledges deeper collaboration with University College Hospital and Oyo State Government to broaden malaria control efforts across the region.
The Malaria Consortium has announced plans to deepen its operational partnerships in Oyo State, engaging both the University College Hospital in Ibadan and the state's Ministry of Health. Dr Kolawole Maxwell, the organisation's director for West and Central Africa programmes, made the announcement during separate advocacy visits by the consortium's Board of Trustees to both institutions.
During discussions at UCH, Maxwell outlined the critical role that tertiary health facilities play in Nigeria's malaria response. Beyond treatment of severe cases, he identified research, staff training, and health system strengthening as areas where the hospital could collaborate more closely with the consortium.
The partnership expansion comes as the organisation, which has operated in Nigeria since 2008, seeks to accelerate progress toward malaria elimination across the country. At the Oyo State Ministry of Health, the consortium committed to extending its support beyond malaria-specific programmes to address broader healthcare delivery challenges in the state.
This expanded mandate reflects a shift toward integrated health interventions that address multiple disease burdens while maintaining focus on malaria prevention and case management. The Malaria Consortium operates across West and Central Africa, implementing health programmes designed to reduce malaria transmission and improve treatment outcomes.
The organisation's decision to formalize deeper ties with Oyo's health infrastructure indicates a strategic pivot toward institutionalising its interventions within existing government and hospital systems rather than operating independently.
