Malawi Stuns Nigeria 3-2 in WAFCON Opener

In a stunning upset at the WAFCON opener on Tuesday night, Malawi defeated Nigeria's Super Falcons 3-2 at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat. The match began with a goalless first half, despite Nigeria dominating early and creating several scoring chances.

The game intensified in the final twenty minutes when Temwa Chawinga scored the first goal for Malawi in the 73rd minute. Her sister, Tabitha Chawinga, extended the lead to 2-0 just six minutes later.

Nigeria's captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, converted a penalty in the 90th minute, giving Nigeria a glimmer of hope. However, Temwa Chawinga struck again in stoppage time (90+6’), restoring Malawi's two-goal advantage.

Although Uchenna Kanu assisted a goal nine minutes into added time, bringing the score to 3-2, Nigeria could not complete the comeback. Following this defeat, the Super Falcons will face Zambia in their next Group C match on Saturday, where they must secure maximum points to stay in contention for qualification.
