Haaland Invests in New Global Chess Championship Tour

Erling Haaland, the Manchester City striker, has invested in a new global chess tour designed to enhance the sport's international appeal and commercial reach. This initiative, backed by the Norwegian Chess Organization, is set to launch the Total Chess World Championship Tour next year.

The tour will consist of four tournaments held annually in different cities worldwide, with an overall champion determined across three formats: classic, rapid, and blitz chess. The International Chess Federation has described this initiative as a significant development for modern chess, with a pilot tournament scheduled for autumn ahead of the full rollout of the season.

The tour will feature a minimum prize pool of $2.7 million, underscoring the project's ambition to attract top players and a global audience. Haaland noted that chess is an incredible game, drawing parallels to football in terms of strategy and quick decision-making.

The new tour is expected to boost the visibility of chess worldwide and strengthen Norway's presence in the global chess scene.
