Flooding Displaces Families in Yobe, SEMA Responds

On Saturday, heavy flooding in Yobe State submerged homes and sanitation facilities, displacing numerous families. Residents from affected areas, including Malari Quarters and Abbari Sabon Kwalta, reported fleeing to seek refuge with relatives or in public buildings.

Malam Bulama Jalaluddeen attributed the flooding to a lack of drainage channels, which has led to recurring damage to properties. Modu Adamu noted that some families have sold their homes and relocated due to the annual flooding.

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirmed the flooding, stating it affected communities in Damaturu, Nguru, Machina, and Bursari local government areas. SEMA reported that preliminary assessments indicated significant damage to residential buildings, with the number of affected households and potential injuries still being verified.

A Rapid Assessment Team has been deployed to evaluate the situation and determine necessary interventions. Residents have been advised to avoid flood-prone areas and disconnect electrical appliances during storms.
