Marine Police Arrest Two For Illegal Oil Bunkering In Akwa Ibom

Two suspects were arrested by the Akwa Ibom State Marine Police for illegal oil bunkering and economic sabotage on August 13. The arrests were made after intercepting a large wooden boat loaded with petroleum products on August 2, 2025, along the Okposo waterway in Mbo Local Government Area.

The suspects were found in possession of stolen crude oil likely from a nearby oil pipeline. The police acted swiftly based on credible intelligence and prevented the illicit cargo from crossing international waters towards Cameroon.

The police assured a thorough investigation to identify the source of the stolen product and possible accomplices. Illegal oil bunkering is a persistent challenge in Nigeria's coastal communities, leading to economic losses, environmental degradation, and security threats.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command urged residents to provide timely information to combat oil theft and related crimes. The suspects are currently in custody and will be charged in court after the investigation is concluded.
