Maritime Operators Push for Equipment Upgrade Roadmap

Maritime operators in Nigeria, represented by Bolaji Sunmola, President of the National Association of Stevedoring Operators, are calling for the development of an industry-wide equipment upgrade roadmap. This initiative aims to engage the Nigerian Ports Authority and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency to enhance operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

Sunmola highlighted the necessity of aligning with green practices to avoid imposing unfunded mandates on operators. He urged the government to anchor green standards within Nigeria's port modernization agenda and ensure that new infrastructure investments consider environmental performance.

The operators seek access to appropriate financing frameworks, including the Green Climate Fund, to support these upgrades. Sunmola noted that improving equipment such as cranes and forklifts would not only enhance cargo handling but also significantly reduce emissions.

The goal is to achieve a minimum 20% reduction in ship emissions by 2030, with aspirations for net-zero emissions by 2050.
